The Game of Women's Soccer



Women's soccer got off to a late start in the USA. Women's leagues existed in Europe way back in 1930 and international competitions dated back until about 1950. In the United States, women's soccer didn't start until about the late 1970's. Varsity college teams began to spread in the early 1980's. A national squad wasn't established until about 1985. In 2001 the first professional women's league started. As you can see, women's soccer has great history.

Abby Wambach




Abby Wambach joined her first soccer league when she was four years old. Then, in 1997, Abby was the National High School Player of the Year. Even though many colleges wanted Abby to play for them, she chose the University of Florida. She took her team to the National College Athletic Association Final Four tournament in 2001. Abby set a lot of records at the University of Florida, including most goals, most assists, and hat tricks. She also began playing for the U.S. Women's National Team in 2001. Her team qualified for the Women's World Cup in 2003. Abby scored the most goals on the U.S. team. So, as you can see Abby Wambach is an amazing soccer player who is very talented.

Kristine Lilly





Kristine Lilly was a girl who was a determined soccer player by the age of six. Kristine lived in New York City and there were no girls' soccer teams, so she joined the boys' team. When Kristine was 15 she was invited onto the U.S. Women's Under-19 National Team in 1991 when they won the World Cup. Lilly has played in more international games than any other man or women in soccer history. In 2005, she was named the U.S. Soccer Female Athlete for the second time in her life. She is the current captain of her team. With her Kristine Lilly Soccer Camp she encourages young girls to follow their dreams. As you can see, Kristine Lilly has a passion for soccer and really enjoys it.

Mia Hamm






Mia Hamm is a very famous soccer player who was born in 1972 in the USA. She is considered the greatest player in the history of women's soccer. Mia Hamm holds the record of scoring the highest amount of international goals. Her record is 158 international goals. Mia won two World Cup Champions with the USA team. Hamm became the youngest player ever for USA to win a World Cup in 1991 when she was 19. She also won two Olympic gold medals for her country. Mia Hamm became the first Fifa World Player of the year, twice in 2001 and 2002. She was included in the list of the 125 greatest living soccer players selected by Pele.

Women's Soccer



There are many famous women soccer players all across the world. Some might be better known than others, but they are still all important. Soccer is getting popular for both women and men. Soccer has been around since the mid-1800s, but different versions have been around for longer. Soccer has to be one of the most popular sports in the whole world because it’s a fast moving game with loads of action. There are two teams with 11 players who move the ball around a humungous field with speedy passes and kicks so hard, you wouldn’t believe it! Soccer is such an interesting, fun, and enjoyable sport that once you get in to it you won’t ever want to stop playing.
